History, Istwa Posted on: May 20, 2005 The defining, emblematic event of Haitian history was the slave revolution that overthrew French colonial rule and established the first Black republic of the modern world. It was the first slave rebellion in history to be successful and the only one to be able to celebrate that success annually for two centuries. The events leading up to the Declaration of Independence of the new nation were truly a revolution –not simply an uprising or a revolt but a revolution that brought about deep and irreversible changes.
